UNSOS and ATMIS commission modern helipads to bolster ATMIS operations

Jowhar - The United Nations Support Office in Somalia (UNSOS) and the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) inaugurated  four newly constructed modern helipads at  the Sector 5 Headquarters Camp in Middle Shabelle State, Somalia.  

The $1.4 million project, completed in November can accommodate four helicopters with a capacity of 3 to 4 tons each, enabling the joint use of this new facility and enhancing logistical support for peace operations.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by senior UN, ATMIS, and Hirshabelle State representatives with the Head of UNSOS, Assistant-Secretary-General, Aisa Kacyira, Ambassador Mohamed El-Amine Souef, the Special Representative of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission (SRCC) for Somalia and Head of ATMIS and Manager of the Jowhar Airfield, Mr. Mukhtar Abukar jointly presiding over the inauguration ceremony. 

This site symbolizes the successful collaboration between Federal Government of Somalia (FGS), AU, and the UN and our commitment to enhancing the infrastructure of Somalia,” said ASG Kacyira on Monday, emphasizing the potential of rebuilding Somalia despite the challenges.

“As UNSOS, we are here to celebrate with everyone and to assure you that the Secretary-General is committed to providing logistical support to ATMIS and in the near future to AUSSOM, and Somali Security Forces,” she said. “Our goal is to ensure a smooth security transition and to leave behind a positive legacy.” 

Ambassador Souef emphasized the helipads’ critical role in addressing transportation challenges faced by the mission. 

“We inaugurate these four helipads, which represent more than just infrastructure; they symbolize hope, resilience, and readiness,” he said. 

He further highlighted the achievements and the importance of trust and cooperation for significant results.

“These helipads will enhance our aviation capabilities, enabling us to respond swiftly to emerging challenges, whether that involves transporting personnel, delivering critical equipment, ensuring a steady supply of rations and water, or providing 24/7 medical evacuation and humanitarian aid. They will be vital tools in saving lives and supporting ground operations,” added Amb. Souef.  

Mukhtar Abukar, Jowhar Airfield Manager, thanked UNSOS for implementing the project in the region. 

“We are extremely happy and grateful for the support provided by the UN and ATMIS to Hirshabelle State, especially to the airport management, which facilitated smooth airport operations,” said Muktar, appreciating that the helipads are legacy assets for Somalia when both UNSOS and ATMIS exit.ATMIS Force Commander Lt. Gen. Sam Kavuma, ATMIS Police Commissioner AIGP Hillary Sao Kanu, Sector Commander Col. Oscar Hatungimana, UNSOS Chief of Service Delivery Management Juan M. L-Palafox, and Commander of Jowhar Airfield Police Station Capt. Musa Yusuf also attended the ceremony.
