Jowhar – The United Nations Support Office in Somalia has supported the delivery of specialised Micro Unmanned Aerial Systems (MUAS) training to 12 troops from the African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia, strengthening surveillance and operational capabilities in Sector 5.
Delivered over a two- week period at Jowhar Airfield by UNSOS Field Technology Services (FTS), the training equipped participants with practical and technical skills in drone operations, including aerial surveillance, intelligence-gathering, and safe navigation of airspace in complex operational environments.

The initiative forms part of UNSOS’ ongoing logistical support to AUSSOM, aimed at enhancing situational awareness and enabling more effective responses to evolving security threats.
Speaking at the closing ceremony, AUSSOM Sector 5 Deputy Commander, Col. Mathias Sibomana, underscored the importance of applying the skills acquires:
“As you move from this course, I encourage you to carry those lessons with you. Whether you are returning to the current roles or stepping into new opportunities, remember that you are now equipped with not just knowledge but also with a network.” said Col. Sibomana.
UNSOS Sector 5 Regional Administrative Officer, Ms. Adja Sakho, highlighted the contribution of the training to enhancing security and operational effectiveness.
“We will be safer as a result of you being drone operators here in Jowhar and all over HirShabelle State,” said Ms Sakho. “What I understand is that this is a risk mitigation strategy to ensure that you have situational awareness, that you can see threats and deter threats before they arrive to us because you will have eyes on the enemy.”

Participants also emphasized the value of the course. Capt. Ciza Floribert noted that the training significantly improved his understanding of drone operations:
“I gained critical knowledge on operating within regulated airspace and applying these tools effectively in the field. These skills will directly support our work in operational areas.”
The closing ceremony was attended by UNSOS-FTS Sector Coordinator George Dannhauser, AUSSOM Sector 5 Chief of Training Lt. Col. Ndayikunda Oscar, and other senior officials.
This initiative underscores UNSOS’ continued commitment to enabling AUSSOM to deliver on its mandate and support the Somali-led peace and security process through strengthened operational capabilities.
