UNSOS is mandated to provided non-lethal logistical support to up to 11,826 uniformed personnel, including 680 police and up to 85 civilians, deployed across 5 sectors and 49 locations in south-central Somalia, covering an area of operations of 400,000 square kilometres.
In full compliance with the United Nations Human Rights Due Diligence Policy (HRDDP), UNSOS provides the following logistical support package to AUSSOM:
a) Life support and operational services, including food, water, health and sanitation, fuel, facilities and engineering, vehicles and equipment, communications and information technology, information support, property management, capacity-building, aviation services, and medical services including MEDEVAC/CASEVAC.
b) Fuel and maintenance support for partner-owned and partner-donated equipment operated by AUSSOM contingents.
c) Capacity-building and training support to enable the safe and effective operation of UN equipment and the delivery of pre-deployment and in-theatre training.
d) Movement and transportation support, upon request of contributing countries, for the deployment, rotation and repatriation of AUSSOM military and police personnel and equipment, using UN assets and third-party contractors.
e) Environmental advisory support, including technical advice to AUSSOM on the development and implementation of its environmental policy and support to strengthen environmental compliance across all sectors.
f) Reimbursement of contingent self-sustainment costs (since 2015), including catering, communications, cleaning services, office supplies and tentage. UNSOS provides these services directly where contingents lack capacity or upon request.
g) Reimbursement of contingent-owned equipment (COE) (since 2012) formalised through an AU–UN Memorandum of Understanding, including reimbursement for equipment lost or damaged due to hostile action. Responsibility for COE losses prior to February 2012 rests with the African Union through voluntary contributions to a UN Trust Fund.
h) Explosive hazard management support, through UNSOS funding to UNMAS, which provides strategic, operational and technical capabilities in support of AUSSOM. UNMAS delivers mentorship, technical advice, analysis and training to prevent and counter the threat of improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and conducts disposal of explosive remnants of war (ERW).
AUSSOM TRUST FUND
The AUSSOM Trust Fund is a voluntary donor mechanism managed by UNSOS to provide essential operational support—such as logistics, medical services, and communications—for the African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia. AUSSOM Trust Fund complements UN-assessed contributions to sustain AUSSOM’s mandate under UNSCR 2809 (2025).
