Mogadishu, 28 October 2026 — The United Nations Support Office in Somalia (UNSOS), in collaboration with Mogadishu University’s Faculty of Aerospace and Aviation, has completed the initial phase of a four-month practical training and professional mentorship programme aimed at strengthening the skills of Somalia’s future aviation professionals.
The initial phase saw eight third-year aviation students — three women and five men — complete the Air Liaison Officer on-the-job- trainining, poviding them with practical exposure to aviation operations and an opportunity to apply their academic knowledge in an operational environment.

The four-month programme is designed to bridge academic learning with practical experience, while introducing students to the professional standards, operational requirements and safety culture that underpin aviation operations.
Implemented under the UNSOS Integrated Movements Section Capacity-Building Program, the training reflects the Mission’s commitment to strengthening national capabilities, promoting knowledge transfer and supporting the long-term development of Somalia’s aviation industry.

Throughout the programme, particiapting students will receive structured exposure to aviation and movement control operations under the guidance of experienced UNSOS personnel.
Through observation and supervised learning, they will develop a deeper understanding of operational procedures, aviation safety standards, coordination mechanisms and the responsibilities associated with working in a complex aviation environment.

Professional mentorship and knowledge transfer are central to the programme. By engaging directly with experienced aviation practitioners, students will have opportunities to strengthen their technical understanding, professional discipline, critical thinking, teamwork and operational accountability.

Investing in Somali students' professional development before graduation helps build a skilled national workforce capable of supporting the country's civil aviation institutions, airport operations, and wider aviation industry.

The program's gender-balanced participation further underscores the importance of ensuring that Somalia's aviation future benefits from the talents and contributions of both women and men. Equitable access to practical experience, professional mentorship, and technical learning opportunities is essential to developing a diverse, competent, and resilient aviation workforce.
By turning academic knowledge into practical competencies and investing in Somalia's young talent, UNSOS and Mogadishu University are are helping prepare the next generation of aviation professionals and contributing to a safer, more inclusive, and sustainable aviation future for Somalia.
