John Odullah of UNSOS wins ‘Name the new Mission’ Competition

Nairobi - Political Liaison Officer at the United Nations Support Office in Somalia (UNSOS), John Odullah, has been announced winner of ‘Name The New Mission’ competition.

The competition, initiated by Under-Secretary-General for Field Support Mr. Atul Khare, required participants to come up with a name which would replace UNSOA and also reflect the expanded mandate of the field support operation.

Out of 143 entries, the name UNSOS was picked by the UN Security Council as the most befitting, for a successor operation to UNSOA.

UNSOS Director Mr. Amadu Kamara, announced the winning entry at a staff meeting, at the United Nations Office at Nairobi on Thursday 17 December 2015.

“Congratulations on nominating the name ‘United Nations Support Office in Somalia’, which became the name of the new Mission,” USG Khare told Odullah in a congratulatory letter read out by Mr. Kamara.

Mr. Odullah won an Ipad Air, a personal prize donated by USG Khare.

“It is such a great moment for me and I have to say that it is a great honor. I am highly pleased to win this prize from the USG. I chose the name that is currently used by our Mission, the United Nations Support Office in Somalia and my reasoning was that, we were transiting from the previous Mission, which was UNSOA, and the basic reason why we were moving away from that name, was that it didn’t reflect what we were doing in Somalia. It only captured one of our clients, which is AMISOM, but now we are including other clients which include the United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia and also the Somali National Army,” said a beaming Odullah shortly after being presented with his prize.

The United Nations Support Office in Somalia (UNSOS) was established on 9 November 2015, through UN Security Council Resolution 2245. UNSOS is the  successor operation to the United Nations Support Office for AMISOM (UNSOA), which was established in 2009 to provide logistical field support to AMISOM, helping it become the largest AU multidimensional peace support operation.
